This spreadsheet contains a comprehensive compilation of state-specific legislation related to artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States, covering the period from 2019 to 2022. It provides a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals to analyze and track the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI at the state level during that time frame. Here's a quick summary:

• State data privacy legislation activity during 2022 cycle was extensive.

• 29 states and the District of Columbia either introduced or carried over data privacy bills from the 2021 legislative session.

• 23 states held committee hearings.

• 14 states passed bills out of committee.

• 7 states passed a bill through one chamber.

• 2 states passed laws.

  • ​Both laws are derived from the 2021 Washington Privacy Act (Senate Bill 5062) which is emerging as the model law as VA & CO also modeled after this law. (CA’s law has not been selected as a model.)

• 5 states now have comprehensive Consumer Data Privacy Laws

  • ​CA (2018), VA (2021), CO (2021), CT (2022), UT(2022)

• Federally, H.B. 8152, American Data Privacy & Protection Act (ADPPA) would largely preempt state privacy laws, but its fate is TBD.
